For many businesses around the world, travel restrictions and reduced economic activity presents a significant threat to growth, particularly for industries that rely on those consumers and manufacturers who are in affected areas, who are part of their global supply and demand chains.
On 11th March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the novel coronavirus a pandemic, with the U.S. banning travel from Europe for 30 days starting Friday 13th March 2020. The CDC have also issued guidance on taking preventative measures related to protecting health and reducing travelling.
If you’re currently in project planning mode in your job, you might be asking yourself questions about how the coronavirus outbreak will impact your delivery timings, project logistics and participant attendance – especially for any face to face research, stakeholder or consumer workshops, team meetings and debriefs.
Below, I’ve addressed some concerns clients are raising as they plan their projects in light of the mounting fears around coronavirus.
What about my projects (both overseas and domestic)?
If you have a project lead or account planner at Kingfisher Consultancy, talk to them regularly as new information is available and check guidance from relevant authorities, including the CDC and World Health Organization (WHO), which continues to monitor the spread of coronavirus. Your top priority should be the safety of you and the people on your project.
Be aware that certain countries and respective corporations have enforced travel restrictions and bans. The entire country of Italy is currently on lockdown, while the U.S. have banned travel from Europe (as of 13th March 2020).
Will my travel arrangements be affected?
The short answer is, possibly. The State Department has advised U.S. citizens to avoid international travel with a possibility that regional travel restrictions will also be enacted to contain the coronavirus.
What do I do if there’s a definite delay in my research project but I still need the results really soon?
We recommend looking into possible alternatives for your current research methodology. First, talk to your current research provider and/or us directly. If you’re concerned that your current methodology for research won’t work out (or there’s a definite chance it won’t work out), we highly recommend looking at backup options for conducting your research project another way.
We want you to know that we have the resource support you might need to keep your insight and strategy projects moving forward safely and efficiently.
What can I be doing internally now to help protect my colleagues?
If you have live projects on at the moment or projects due to go live soon, we recommend proactively suggesting all project meetings now go online where possible via encrypted video conferencing systems.
For all of us here at Kingfisher Consultancy, everyone’s health and safety, the security of data handling and the maintenance of high quality outputs through effective and collaborative working are our 3 key priorities.
This is a difficult time affecting everybody. It’s clear that no one should feel obligated to travel or work face to face if they don’t feel comfortable, so do let us know if your upcoming project plans need rearranging, adjusting or redesigning in any way. We’re here to help.
Above all, we encourage you to make decisions that prioritise and protect your and your family’s health and safety.
The show must go on!
